You have channeled the spirit of Eleanor Burns! She was the original "fabric stripper" of quilts. She made tearing strips popular before we had rotary cutters. She still has a RUclips channel called Quilt in a day.
I can NOT WAIT to see this all quilted & washed!!!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS IDEA!!! So many scraps could go into this. And imagine all the orphan layer cake squares that could get camouflaged under so GREAT colored strips!!! And 2.5 strips torn in half would eventually fray, don't you think???
29:40 -- "There is not really a design to this quilt, it's just fun!" -- It definitely looks fun; the colors, the blocks, the directions. This would be a great Quilt-As-You-Go project with scraps too. 🤩
Love your idea and I’ll have to try it! I’ve got a cat named Oliver and he likes to sit right on top of whatever fabric I’m working on and demand some attention, like your Oliver. 😂
Free style patchwork. Wonderful. It looks like fun. Did you try setting your seams before trimming? Mother would tear her fabric to find the true grain. I have never liked to tear my fabric; because, tearing stretches my fabric (and sometimes distorts the print). How are you going to quilt this (machine, hand, or hand tacked)?
I love this quilt idea so much, the bright colors just fill my soul! And my new kitten really loved watching Oliver and kept trying to catch the strips you were ripping. 😂
When I am at church; when greeting and before the service begins I see some of the most beautiful fabric in the men’s shirts. I can’t help myself- that would make a beautiful quilt!!! 😂
I love your ability to just do it. It turned out really cute. I think on the ones that pretty much covered the 4 patch they will show up after washing.
What a great idea! I love all of the colors and I’m always looking for a stress reliever! This may be a great solution to that! Thanks April for another great idea and video!
This was different. Looks like fun. But I think I would have used the torn strips on every block all different ways. I do think when you wash it, it will shrivel up. You gotta show us when you wash it what it looks like.
Great idea to rip the fabric! Quilt looks great. I want to try this technique but I think I would sew two lines of stitching on each strip. I am very curious to see what it looks like after washing. I’m afraid with just the one line of stitching, the strips would curl up so much, you wouldn’t see much of them. Thanks again for a wonderful, fun project.
The scraps would be cool to add to a wider strip for a border. Looks cool. I may try this with some of my wider selvages so just 1 side would be raw and would have the selvage words on it for further interest. You should do a selvage something video, ha ha your challenge. Cheers.
Awesome colors! Before you started moving some of your squares around, I was telling you which ones to move. Was to many dark in one area and light on another. Turned out great.
You always come up with some cute ideas that I didn't think would work when you first start. I like it and bet Oliver likes it too. I noticed your Saints tee and had to comment - they're playing my Chiefs at my home Monday Night Football.. Go Chiefs! (I just had to throw that in LOL) Love watching you. Thanks.
Ha! So I am a Saints fan because I went to a real game and saw them. However, Joe Montana played for the San Fran 49ers and he is my all time favorite player making me a 49ers fan, too. Then at the end of his career he went to the Chiefs making a Chiefs fan as well. LOL. So I am good with either team winning. :-). Go Saints! Go Chiefs!
What a fun quilt to design although I freaked out when you started tearing the fabric and loose threads at any time drive me bonkers. My favourite block was the one with strips on the diagonal. I used to love making the raggedy edged quilts for my grandies. I once bought a dress that I wanted to cut up and use somehow but it's still hanging in the cupboard. 🤷♀
QUESTION. So fun technique. But please tell me more about the fabric. JoAnn website is a bit hard to navigate I desperately want that fabric. Love live love Oliver.
Hi. That is my design wall and it is made of flannel fabric. It allows me to see what my quilt will look like. I am glad you are quilting and watching my channel.
@@aprilscraftroom that's so cool, I would have never thought of using flannel. My memaw was a master quilter in her younger years. She's 98 and mostly blind now. I used to watch her when I was little. Now that I'm in my mid 50's, I've decided to take up the hobby. I hope I do as beautiful work as she did, and as you do.
I would say you've got it covered. I haven't been as lucky as you going to all those places. Hope you will be able to watch the game, that is if you want to. Take care and eat some chocolate.🙂
It's hard to tell if this is a joke or not. I've never seen anything like this and I'm not sure why anyone would go to all the trouble to make something like this. It's sloppy looking, but I suppose it too has a purpose. I wonder what the finished quilt looks like. It's just all very strange to me.

I love her. I bought one of her books. Her story is amazing!
I can NOT WAIT to see this all quilted & washed!!!!!!

Love this!! Hurry & show us it after washed!!!
You have to show us this after it’s been quilted and washed!
Definitely! I'm looking forward to seeing the result.

My old cat Moody used to do the same thing
I appreciate designing as you go - my genre with scraps
Very different from anything you have ever done before, love the colors
Thank you for showing this technique. I do agree with you. It looks like fun.😂🎉
Reminds me of the 80's with the colors. So cute.
You are so good at chatting thru these things
A friend of mine gave me a cup that says - of course I talk to myself when I need excellent crafting advice. LOL. Thank you for watching.
Yeah you've got your Saints Jersey on !! Now I know you've been in my town , but I didn't know you were a Saints Fan ! Geaux Saints !! 😊

I love it....the more colors and fabrics you can get into a quilt, the better!!
This was so fun to watch. Just rip and keep going. That FQ bundle was beyond adorable. Such fun and bright colors. What a fun idea. 🤗🤗
This would be a super fun project for a kid to make like a pillow or a small item or doll quilt.
This would be great for a quag rag quilt!
Your bright colors would also look very good if you chenilled the blocks.
It is funny you say that because I have another video with Chenille it on the horizon. ;-)
I just love, Oliver
I love this quilt idea so much, the bright colors just fill my soul! And my new kitten really loved watching Oliver and kept trying to catch the strips you were ripping. 😂
Can't wait to see it after it's been washed!! Such a FUN pattern!!

I am glad you liked it. :-)
I love it. It's fun, colorful ,and didn't take much to make it. Luv you!
Awesome
Oh my goodness I love those materials colors
Thank you - you know I love the rainbow colors. :-)
Nice editing ❤
I was so happy you moved two white squares to the top row. I love it.
I would have been drawn to those also and bought them
That is the cutest quilt ever.
Love all those colors 😍
Thank you - me too! They are so bright and pretty.
That fat quarter bundle is so pretty. ❤❤❤❤❤
It will be interesting to see it after it is washed. I hope you will share that with us too. Happy quilting.
Different but cute, love Oliver.
Love it !!
Awesome! Thanks for the love! You rock!
Cute quilt love the bright colors
Could have twisted some of them to give it another dimension like it was on the shirt. Oliver was like not today momma.
Like the the unique design, so cute!

from Gerry- That is such a fun quilt! You could do this with left over pre-cuts and have a great quilt, too. God bless.
Very colorful. Great idea.
Thank you! :-)
So cute ❤I love it. Kinda reminds me of the rag quilts.
Very nice quilt thanks for sharing 😊

Very creative!
Thank you! Cheers!
Love that fabric!!!
Me, too!
I’m thinking of trying this looks like fun
I hope you do - you will enjoy it.
I love this idea and will have to give this a shot!! I enjoy watching you.
Thank you. :-).
Really pretty fabrics!
I agree! :-)
I have that bundle 😂 i can make this now 😂
Share with a friend! You each grab every other strip end. Then pull and backup! Instant gratification!!!
My local JoAnn's NEVER has nice wrapped bundles like yours.
Just stringy, ragged precuts that you're lucky if you have enough fabric to use.
How do you keep your fabric so neat?
You have all darker blocks on the top and most of the light blockson the bottom. Try to have the colors spread out over the quilt as well.
So very interesting! How would you quilt it so that it doesn’t interfere with the fraying process?
Just looked at your tour info but decided since i live in Belfast that flying from New York to Dublin was a bit over the top!
I love those fabric, can you still get them at
Jo Ann
I am not sure - but I would definitely go to the store and see. They are so pretty in person. I couldn't find that particular bundle online.
Thank you, please let me know, I appreciate it.
I’d like to see the quilt after it had been quilted and washed to see the final result
Love it

You always make my day.
Love the quilt, just think needs more plain blocks
Hi cool design, just curious why I r not using the lines on the board to cut your fabric? Maybe they r not exactly correct?? Tks
I tear all my borders. Sometimes my bindings too.
Wow love the fabric. No Joanne's in Northern Ireland 😢
Sorry to hear that!
I’m coming to Ireland in Sept 2025! I cannot wait!!!!

I really like your unplanned blocks 😊
What is the stuff you stick your blocks to to set up your pattern?
New subbie and new to quilting.

April, what's the name of the iron you're using, please?
It is a Rowenta Performance iron 1725 watts. I got mine at Walmart. :-)
@aprilscraftroom Sorry to bother you again, but I forgot to ask if it's a cordless?
So, are you worried about the threads continuing to come off from the torn strips?
No. I will throw a couple microfiber towels in with it. Those things grab everything. 😀
Oh my goodness..That was hilarious..Couldn’t get it open
How can plastic be so hard to open? Seriously! LOL
Hi April
Hi!
OLIVER!!
Put fewer strips on so the background is visible.
What are the fat quarters bundle called
She found it at JoAnn Fabrics
Sorry I didn't remember the name of that bundle 🫢🤔😮!
It is from High-Fashion and I found them at Joann's. I looked online and didn't see them - they may only be in stores.
Thank you l really like it
❤❤❤❤
my sewing teacher in home ed would rip the fabric too.
Looks amazing rip it up !! 😅
Hi Oliver you sure are a cutie
He is quite the ham! LOL
I'm sorry April. But your tearing up the strips was disturbing her majesty's Naptime lol.
My JoAnn store doesn’t have any cute 😢 choices of pre-cuts👿
Please don’t cut Oliver’s paws off.
